Monsanto's Dream Bill -- HR 875

Monsanto's Dream Bill -- HR 875

Congressional Bill HR 875 was introduced by Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro, whose husband Stanley Greenburg works for Monsanto. The bill is essentially a giant gift package for Monsanto, mandating the criminalization of seed banking, prison terms and confiscatory fines for small farmers and 24 hour GPS tracking of their animals, and of "industrial" standards to independent farms.

The corporations want nothing less than full control of the land, the end of normal animals so they can substitute patented genetically engineered ones, and the end of normal seeds and thus of seed banking by farmers or individuals.

Transgenic production up

Transgenic production up

Increase of genetically-modified crops threaten farmers and consumers.

Last year, Brazil became home to the world´s third largest area of planted transgenic crops, according to a São Paulo-based organization.

The Council of Biotechnology Information said that there are close to 16 million hectares (35 million acres) of genetically-modified crops in Brazil, following the United States – home to half of the world´s transgenic crop area with more than 62 million hectares (153 million acres) – and Argentina, which has more than 19 million hectares (47 million acres).

Soy, of which Brazil is the world top exporter, comprised most of the country´s genetically-modified farmland, with 14 million hectares (34.6 million acres). Additionally, 1.4 million hectares (3.4 million acres) of transgenic corn and 400,000 hectares (990,000 acres) of transgenic cotton had been registered in 2008.
